2018 Cosplay JudgeS

For almost 50 years, Toi Whakaari: New Zealand Drama School has been the country’s leading trainer of professional actors and now also offers international quality degree qualifications in Performing Arts Management, Design for Stage and Screen (the only course of its kind in New Zealand) and a two-year – highly practical and hands-on – diploma in costume construction. Graduates of the costume diploma have gone on to work at places like Weta Workshop, the Royal New Zealand Ballet and on big budget films like Ghost in the Shell as well as WoW. In 2018, Toi Whakaari is introducing a new two-year diploma course in set and prop construction.

Kaarin Slevin

After completing a BA in Communications-Theatre/Media at Charles Sturt University in Australia, Kaarin embarked on a freelance career as a costumier which saw her working across Australia for resident theatre companies, big-budget musicals (including Beauty and the Beast and Sunset Boulevard) and small project-based groups. In 1997 Kaarin accepted a full-time position with Opera Australia, where she had the opportunity to collaborate with local and international designers, creating costumes for the vast repertoire of Australia’s national opera company.

In 2005 she moved to New Zealand and set up the Diploma of Costume Construction at Toi Whakaari: New Zealand Drama School which recently celebrated its 10th year of graduating students. Kaarin continues to practise her profession and has been involved in creating costumes for Weta Workshop, Capital E, the Amici Trust (Phantom of the Opera) and The Hobbit trilogy.

Francis Gallop

My career spans many media and production roles. I have worked predominantly in theatre but also for film and television. Up until 2017 I’ve been based in the UK, primarily working in Scotland.

As a designer I’ve worked for most of the major producing theatres there, including the National Theatre of Scotland. My primary interests in live theatre are site-specific work and new writing. I’ve also designed large scale public and corporate events for major clients like England’s National Trust.

As a set and props fabricator, I often construct my own designs, whilst also working for other media and commercial clients. As a scenic artist I’ve painted international touring shows for the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal National Theatre, as well as work at Pinewood, Elstree and Shepperton film studios.

In my parallel career in higher education, I was formerly course leader for the MA in Stage and Screen Practice at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh.
