2017 sponsor

Brother International (NZ) Limited are delighted to sponsor Armageddon’s 2017 Cosplay Competition. We love encouraging aspiring artists and costume makers and are thrilled to partner with Armageddon this year to recognise creativity. At Brother, we’ve been making sewing machines for over 100 years that have been the foundation for many incredible creations. We’re proud innovators in our field with new technologies that enable precision finishings, interesting embellishment and the use of modern materials to bring to life complex design. We can’t wait to see this year’s designs and look forward to awarding emerging talent and creative flair with a Sewing Machine for the winner at each of the five New Zealand Events. Prizes include 1 x JA1400 (RRP $199) for each of Dunedin, Christchurch, Tauranga and Wellington and 1 x NS15 (RRP $549) for Auckland.

2017 Cosplay Judge

For almost 50 years, Toi Whakaari: New Zealand Drama School has been the country’s leading trainer of professional actors and now also offers international quality degree qualifications in Performing Arts Management, Design for Stage and Screen (the only course of its kind in New Zealand) and a two-year – highly practical and hands-on – diploma in costume construction. Graduates of the costume diploma have gone on to work at places like Weta Workshop, the Royal New Zealand Ballet and on big budget films like Ghost in the Shell as well as WoW. In 2018, Toi Whakaari is introducing a new two-year diploma course in set and prop construction. Applications for all courses will open in June 2017.

The head of the Toi Whakaari costume construction course, Kaarin Macaulay, is proud to have been asked to judge entries in the Armageddon CosplayCompetition this year.

After completing a BA in Communications-Theatre/Media at Charles Sturt University in Australia, Kaarin embarked on a freelance career as a costumier which saw her working across Australia for resident theatre companies, big-budget musicals (including Beauty and the Beast and Sunset Boulevard) and small project-based groups. In 1997 Kaarin accepted a full-time position with Opera Australia, where she had the opportunity to collaborate with local and international designers, creating costumes for the vast repertoire of Australia’s national opera company.

In 2005 she moved to New Zealand and set up the Diploma of Costume Construction at Toi Whakaari: New Zealand Drama School which recently celebrated its 10th year of graduating students. Kaarin continues to practise her profession and has been involved in creating costumes for Weta Workshop, Capital E, the Amici Trust (Phantom of the Opera) and The Hobbit trilogy.
